The Republic Dam is now back in operation!

Posted on

The Michigamme River Basin Authority (TIFA) with the help of private benefactors and their TIFA Funds have purchased the dam and are in the process of getting the remaining funding necessary to complete the purchase of the dam and pay for the new gates.  The DEQ has graciously provided the TIFA with a 5 year operating permit.  We are all so grateful!

We are quietly world famous for having the Northwoods’ best four seasons activities in the UP. including watching wildlife, observing fall colors, snowmobiling, fishing for trout, walleye, and bass. We also have hunting for white tail deer or black bear, ORVing, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing, hiking, cycling, white water kayaking as well as quiet kayaking, canoeing, camping at Moose Rapids campground, and  the new township Northern Lights Campground that was built this past summer that is nestled between the Michigamme River and School Lake on the south edge of the village of North Republic. Just a sampling of the great outdoor activities available.

Republic is experiencing a rebirth after the Republic specular hematite mine closed in 1981. The goal of the intergovernmental agreement between Humboldt Township and Republic Township  is the re-activation of the rail line servicing the Republic Mine and potentially the nickle deposits south of the current mine. The iron ore reclamation portion will reopen as soon as ore prices correct themselves and the product can be sold. Also, more mineral deposits have been found nearby by the mining companies and the Eagle Mine is the first of many expected developments. To process the minerals from the Eagle Mine,  the processing mill in the old Humboldt Mine location just North of Republic was completely renovated.  Jobs are available both at the Mine, and the processing plan. For housing, there are a number of houses in our community available at reasonable prices.

Now is the time to make a commitment to yourself and your family to be on the ground floor of the upcoming renaissance of the community.
